ABSTRACT
Conclusion:
Effortful control had more effects on internalizing and externalizing problems compared to temperamental traits and also, it was a predictor for prosocial behavior. The internal consistency of internalizing problems, externalizing problems and prosocial behaviors subscales of SDQ were found in a moderate range. Three-factor structure of SDQ can be used in low risk samples in early adolescents.
Results:
High level of frustration, low level of effortful control and surgency predicted internalizing problems. Externalizing problems were predicted by high surgency, frustration and low effortful control and affiliation. Prosocial behaviors were associated with high affiliation, high effortful control and low surgency. Total problems were predicted by low levels of effortful control, surgency, affiliation and high frustration. The internal consistency reliability of internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and prosocial behaviors subscales of SDQ were found as 0.63, 0.64, and 0.67, respectively.
Materials and Methods:
1,563 young adolescents (46.4% female, 53.5% male) were recruited from secondary school in İstanbul. SDQ and Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaires were administered to the participants.
Objectives:
In this study, the primary aim was to demonstrate the effect of temperamental traits on psychiatric symptoms. The secondary aim was to make the reliability of the 3-factor structure of the Strengths Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ).
Keywords:
Temperament, effortful control, internalizing problems, externalizing problems
